Two years ago, I had the opportunity to assist in bringing GOTR to Shades Cahaba Elementary School. I never imagined the amazing things that would come as a result of this program. I want to share two of my favorite memories of my Shades Cahaba girls.
Spring GOTR 5k 2012:
It was the first GOTR 5k that Shades Cahaba participated in, and for many, it was their first 5k. The SCE girls were all lined up at the starting line, and they were excited. They had their running buddies beside them, their tutus on, and ready to accomplish the goal they had been working on for the past 10 weeks. They were off! Approximately 30 minutes pass and they start crossing the finish line. The girls return to the end of the shoot cheering their teammates as they arrive to finish. Every girl returns to cheer that day, even until their last teammate rounds the corner for the last 100 meters. Then, all the girls run to her, and turn and finish the race as a team!
*That was a very moving moment as their coach, because they got it.*
November 24, 2013- Fall GOTR 5k:
Let me tell you how one of my girls became my hero after her race.
As MY HEROS left the race, they approach a homeless woman. MY HERO and her mom stopped to converse with the woman. During the conversation, the woman told MY HERO that her friends call her a Super Hero. MY HERO took off her cape that the coaches had made her, and gave it to the woman.
*MY HABA HEROS ROCK!*
I could take up the whole page with stories that show the impact this program has on 3rd- 5th grade girls. This program has not only strengthened the girls that participate in the 10 week program, but it has strengthened me as person as well. I believe the girls have taught me more than I have taught them. I am honored to be associated with this program that is changing girl’s lives in the Birmingham area.
On April 26, 2014 I will be running in the Music City Marathon in Nashville, TN. in honor of all the girls, past and present, who have participated in the Girls On The Run program at Shades Cahaba. I ask that you join me in celebrating all these beautiful ladies.
Thanks for your support,
