Thank you for your interest in volunteering with Girls on the Run NYC! Girls on the Run is a life skills program which utilizes the power of running to help 3rd through 8th grade girls uncover their extraordinary potential. We inspire girls to be joyful, healthy and confident using a fun, experience-based curriculum which creatively integrates running. This year our program, which weaves training for a 5k with fun and inspirational life skills lessons, will be serving over 1,000 girls across NYC!
To help us learn about you, please complete this application so that we can match your skills and interests with activities that you will enjoy.
You can select more than one of the volunteer opportunities listed.
All volunteers that will have direct contact with the girls in our program must agree to a Background Check.

COACH for Girls on the Run | Warm-up your spirit fingers, lace up your sneakers and inspire a group of girls to be strong and healthy. Teams of volunteer coaches facilitate our easy to follow curriculum with groups of 8-15 girls over the course of 10 weeks. Amidst the conversation, laughter, hugs and energy awards, you will witness transformational change in the girls and don’t be surprised if you realize that you are positively changing as well! The program may end in 10 weeks, but for our coaches and girls, the finish line is just the beginning. Ready to make a difference and encourage girls to realize their full potential? The first step is signing up. Ready, Set, Coach!
Coaches commit to one or two practice sessions each week for our 10-week fall & spring seasons. Girls on the Run will provide training and materials for our Girls on the Run (3rd – 5th grade) and Girls on the Run Middle School (6th – 8th grade) curriculums, and we will need you to provide your time, energy, and support! We accept applications for Coaching year-round. We will be reaching out to recent coach applicants with the remaining needs for the upcoming season and the next steps to get involved.
- Teams meet twice a week for 75-90 minutes; for 10 weeks.
- The season culminates with a celebratory 5k at the end of the season.
- The majority of our sites meet Monday-Friday during after-school hours, between 3 pm-5 pm.
- Please note that there are a limited number of early morning, evening and weekend sites available.
- Coaches are required to commit to at least one day per week; 2 is preferred.
- If you have flexibility in your schedule on certain days, please let us know in your application!
For more information on Coach Responsibilities please review our Head Coach Description & Assistant Coach Description. Apply and we will reach out about the next steps in our Coach Process! If you have further questions regarding coaching, email email@example.com.
GENERAL COMMITTEE VOLUNTEER | If you would like to be involved with the Girls on the Run mission long-term but don't have the flexibility to coach, we have several volunteer opportunities beyond one-time events, such as being a Committee Volunteer.
Committee Volunteers help our small office with communications, development, SoleMates, volunteer engagement, special events, and more. The commitment varies between committees but every group is essential to the organization.
Those interested in becoming a Committee Volunteer are required to attend a Volunteer Orientation. After you’ve submitted your volunteer application, you will receive a confirmation email with the next steps to get involved. The email will include how to sign up for a Volunteer Orientation and an Outreach Ambassador Training.
ONE-TIME VOLUNTEER | Get involved for a day; if you are interested in being part of the Girls on the Run mission and can commit to one event at a time, we would love your help at our 5k. It's the best day of the year and it is possible because of the energy of our volunteers as running buddies, course marshals, number-one-fans, and more. We also have other opportunities throughout the year to help with smaller events and office support.
We look forward to learning more about you and your volunteer interests!
